Toastmasters 4 Writers Speech Competition February 25th

Speech evaluation and International Speech Club Level competition will be conducted during the February 25th Toastmasters4Writers meeting. The winners will move up to District 52 competition, representing TM4W. Visitors are welcome and encouraged to bring a friend to our Saturday meeting, which will be at Write Brothers Software, 348 E. Olive St., Suite #H, Burbank, CA 91502, 9:30AM to 11:30AM. Visitors will experience a working meeting, which features the talents and efforts of several of the top communicators in Burbank as they compete for speaking honors.
New prospective members are also invited to attend the two TM4W meetings in March on the 10th and 24th. Please bring a friend to experience the TM4W talented speakers and personally see how you can improve your communication skills until you also are a superior public speaker.
TM4W learn to pitch their book & screen-play proposals, develop skills to promote themselves and their writing projects and evolve as confident communicators. Please join us and bring a friend Saturday, February 25, 2012, then March 10th and 24th.

Please join us for our bi-monthly Toastmasters 4 Writers meetings February 11 and 25th at Write Brothers Software offices 348 E. Olive, Suite H, Burbank, CA. 91502, 9:30AM to 11:30AM. We are open to new members, especially during our Spring membership drive, which runs from February 1-March 31, 2012. You can watch active members as they use their Toastmasters skills in presenting prepared speeches and speaking extemporaneously on a variety of topics. We encourage you to visit with a friend, if you wish, and be welcomed by our friendly members as you enter the door. You may watch, observe and/or fully participate during your first meeting. If you have ever felt trepidation at the thought of public speaking, Toastmasters4Writers is the meeting for you.
Members have their speeches video'd and can look back during the week to view their performance on line. I personally was told by the founder of TM4W that I randomly move across the stage with no apparent purpose waving my arms and gesturing while making speeches. I wasn't sure what she was meant until I viewed myself on our on-line video prancing and galloping across the speaking area with absolutely no reason to be moving around. I was embarrassed for myself, but learned from her comments that were verified by the prancing video.
Toastmasters4Writers offers easy to understand structured lessons on public speaking. New members, after reading three pages from our Toastmasters Manual can open up a new world of speaking in public to themselves. Yes, step-by-step you learn and improve. If you are a kinesthetic learner and benefit from a mentor that will spend time guiding you through a lesson, TM4W, unlike other Toastmasters Clubs, can connect you with a seasoned speaker-mentor.
TM4W members are encouraged to invite a prospective member to our next meeting February 11th. We are looking for four new members by the end of March, 2012. The economy has given us all our ample share of challenges. Whether you are looking for a new job, fighting for a promotion, becoming an entrepreneur, learning leadership skills or rebounding after receiving a lay off notice, we all must continue to develop our speaking, writing and leadership skills. Toastmasters4Writers will expose you to individuals in various industries who can encourage you, guide you, mentor you and point to that positive path which can assist you in achieving your goals.

Successfully delivering a speech in a TM4W meeting is comparable to receiving accolades from your closest friends after you have mastered a task and been told your skills are excellent and you are a worthwhile person. We all need that feeling of validation and realization we are worthy and competent persons. TM4W can give us that boost we need, especially during these tough economic times.

Regardless of where we are professionally, personally with our families, physically, spiritually, socially, we constantly want to improve our skills and talents. If you just had a set-back in any of these areas, and it's your first negative experience, it's a reminder we all go through the "down times." What's exciting to realize, is that we almost always come out of those dips. Anxiety and upset are necessary for awhile, but action toward improving and getting better is where TM4W members position themselves. We want to learn new skills. Our members will celebrate your communication, writing and leadership successes with you. We all have the sense that we are getting better and will reach our goals if we refuse to give up. Toastmasters 4 Writers Meetings January 14 & 28, 2012, 9:30AM-11:30AM

Toastmasters4Writers will open 2012 with meetings on the 14th and 28th of January, at Write Brothers Software, 348 E. Olive St., Suite H, Burbank, CA 91502, 9:30-11:30AM (the second and fourth Saturdays of the month). Toastmasters' primary goal is to maintain and improve communication and leadership skills. TM4W group was formed in 2005 by two founders who were writers and wanted in addition to improving their speaking skills, become effective writers, thus the title Toastmasters4Writers. Several published, self-published and aspiring to be published writers, authors, songwriters, screenwriters, blog writers and those interested in writing are members and regularly benefit from the instructional program provided by Toastmasters International. You are not required to be a "published writer," simply interested in writing.

You will learn how to present a prepared and rehearsed speech, field questions from the minds of members with your newly learned extemporaneous speaking skills, lead a group of talented individuals in a lively discussion of public speaking or hear how a member published her newest fiction novel and other valuable skills. Visitors are energized simply hearing about the successes of members as they develop as writers, speakers and leaders.

During out holiday meeting we heard from some of our members about recent personal successes they attribute to their experiences with Toastmasters4Writers including Founder Barbara Shifman's recent on line published non-fiction book, Janet Walters, Current President's published fiction novel, Eric Tozzi's independent film short in post-production, Caesi Bevis' advocacy group curriculum written for individuals in need of health support and Sylvia Carey's published novel. Former President Ron Oberon gave us further information on his projects and the progress of the messages found in his two books using "automatic writing."You will have opportunities to hear about how these successful Toastmasters4Writers found their niche and located the inspiration to see their projects to fruition.

Table Topics is a laughable/dead-serious time when the TT Master asks questions and identifies persons in the room to provide answers to the questions. You might be asked to talk about the Kardashians and Tim Tebow, your beliefs about Global Warming and Climate Change or reveal the joys of bonding with your first pet, etc, etc. You'll be amazed how skillful you will become thinking on your feet and answering these types of questions. Your quick wit and scintillating stories will make you the "life of your next party." You can be assured you will find TM4Writers meetings fascinating, fun, entertaining and motivational. This week we welcome as a visitor Colin Waite, who saw our infomercial in the IWOSC newsletter. We hope some of Colin's friends from IWOSC will also be able to visit Saturday.

Holiday Meeting December 17, 2011, 9:30AM-11:30AM

Toastmasters4writers will conduct its final meeting of the year December 17, 2011, 9:30AM-11:30AM at Write Brothers Software, 348 East Olive St., Suite H, Glendale, CA 91502. Members are asked to bring a dish to be included in our holiday buffet.

It was a visit with friends returning from Asia that lead me to my exposure to a flu strain that stripped me of energy needed to work and voice to communicate my concerns, desires and wishes. Toastmasters for writers members customarily express themselves with fluidity and grace, easily making their preferences known. You can't defend yourself from verbal attack or objections if your vocal chords literally produce no sound. It is frightening. When will my voice return?

I have begun a comback and recovery. I must rest my voice, but am able to ask people to do specific tasks and communicate my desires, especially if I rest my voice throughout the day.

Individuals who fail to develop effective oral communication skills either via enrollment in speech classes or a less expensive and more effective program such as Toastmasters4Writers, are at a distinct disadvantage from those who continue to improve. Those who don't maintain their communication skills lag behind their more skilled competitors, regardless of the industry.

Superb writers are not necessarily stellar speakers. You need both skills. You must practice the two skills separately, although you will use your vocabulary, syntax and grammar in both settings. Develop you speaking skills, and concurrently spend time presenting that which you have written during Toastmasters4Writers meetings. We meet the second and fourth Saturday of each month. Be nice to your vocal cords.

Toastmasters 4 Writers Meetings in December 3 and 17th, 2011

Your speaking skills will be used throughout the Holiday season. Feel confident speaking before your family gatherings, proposing a toast or saying a dinner time prayer. Instructions from our Toastmasters manuals will give you additional guidance in becoming a memorable speaker, adequately recognizing the family members whom you cherish and are recipients of your love.
I have seen and heard too many Thanksgiving and Christmas toasts that were not well structured and delivered by sincere speakers, but lost their impact upon delivery. TM4Writers know that you can be an encouraging, sparkling and lauded speaker as you deliver a toast to your family and your friends.

Politicians, starlets, ball players and singers frequently find speech-making a difficult task. Look at the recent Presidential debate in which one candidate blocked out from consciousness the name of one federal agency he would eliminate. Had he been a Toastmasters4Writers member, he wouldn't have lost his focus, would have rehearsed his statement and would have the information in his notes to back out of his "mental block moment." Finally, because of rehearsal time he put in, he would have had a comment to get him out of his "faux pas moment."
Toastmasters4Writers club is a member of District 52 Toastmasters, which conducts training conferences two times per year. Scott Miller, Laura Crockett and Janet Walters, TM4W's, were highly touted during the meeting for their hard work and dedication to Toastmasters. These three individuals were repeatedly praised and hammered with glowing accolades for starting new TM clubs in the Burbank, West Hollywood areas. We as TM4W members are proud of their accomplishments. We will miss Scott and Laura when they move to the east coast after the Holidays. We know they will continue to be Toastmaster achievers in their new cities.

Improve your skills as a speaker by visiting Toastmasters 4 Writers the second and fourth Saturdays of the month at 348 E. Olive, Suite H, Burbank, CA, 9:30AM to 11:30AM. I become a monotonous speaker when I neglect to practice my skills as a communicator. My voice sags, evolves into a sickening and boring single tone when I am not mindful of my voice's impact on others.
My conscious goal is vocal efficiency--- production of maximum vocal output with minimum effort. An efficient voice is smooth, versatile and produced with very little effort. Toastmasters 4 Writers members grapple with speaking skill improvement week after week, improving as we put forth maximum effort. We give one another encouragement when we are less than perfect. We allow errors while we strive for excellence. We compete, critique and provide tactful suggestions.
We have a need to move our voices around: My voice loudness or volume jumps into the too quiet pit, then to inaudible or even to flat. I strive for good voice projection that is easily heard and is vibrant and dynamic. I have become conscious of high, shrill and monotonous vocal pitch. I know pitch can be low, full and varied. Variety makes it interesting: high, low, forceful, commanding, contrite.
My voice quality races from nasal, to breathy to harsh and raspy and then to lifeless. I push to reach the speaking goal of becoming open, clear, mellow and enthusiastic as a speaker. I want to regulate my word usage or articulation so its not slushy, lazy lipped, tangle tongued, tight jawed, mumbling with mispronounced words. I want my word usage to be clear, crisp, controlled, open mouthed, with strong projection and accurately pronounced words.
Toastmasters provides each member with "large print, easy to read" three page manual lessons that greatly assist in improving out abilities as speakers. Work we may at our own pace throughout the year.

Excruciatingly Shy to Confident Communicator!

You absolutely must break out of your "painfully shy" patterns to become a "competent communicator" and effective leader. Most successful speakers begin with trepidation, then move toward excellence as a communicator. You must be able to sell yourself, your book, your script by speaking confidently about your skills, abilities and/or products/services.

Most individuals are not so poised that they are able to approach total strangers, introduce themselves and talk about the reasons they should be hired, be selected as a dating partner or be considered for a part in a play. Most individuals find it difficult to confidently introduce themselves and are reluctant to present a marketing pitch. Toastmasters know almost all individuals can achieve this with minimal training and experience. The Toastmasters program will introduce you through skill development activities to the world of public speaking, effective leadership and dynamic sales. You simply must be bold enough to visit a "Toastmasters 4 Writers" meeting where you will be introduced to the universe of improved and impressive public speaking.

We can all move from "painfully shy" to become a "confident speaker" by participating in a revitalized Toastmasters speaking program. We all can learn. We all can improve. TM4W SPEAKERS SCORE BIG IN DISTRICT 52 COMPETITION!

   Scott Miller captured first place in Table Topics District 52 competition, September 24, 2011. representing Toastmasters 4 Writers. We also congratulate David Jenkins for garnering a second place in the Tall Tales division. Competition in both Table Topics and Tall Tales features members from all Toastmasters clubs in the Glendale, Burbank and North Hollywood areas. We are especially pleased that our own club received such strong recognition at the District 52 level. Both Scott and David began as novice speakers, not too many years ago and have become stellar performers, consistently in TM4W and District 52.
   The next Toastmasters 4 Writers meeting is set for Saturday, October 8, 2011, 9:30AM to 11:30AM. You're invited to observe and/or participate in a meeting by visiting Wright Brothers Office Building 348 E. Olive, Suite H, Burbank, CA 91502. Bring your very best friend, family or someone you met "out in the world," but please do join us on the 8th, even if you are solo.
   Improve your communications, public speaking, leadership and interpersonal skills by becoming a Toastmaster. Pam suggested visiting the manager of Writer's Book Store to schedule a TM4W meeting in their store. E.R. suggested emailing Writer's Society for Technical Communication for new member leads.
